The Coega Industrial Development Zone is positioned within the pioneering heart of the South African automotive industry – born in 1924 with the Ford Motor Company.

Today, the area services three Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) General Motors, Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz.

Support for these giants is provided by over 180 component suppliers, including Goodyear, Bridgestone, Corning, Visteon, Hella, Faurecia, LUK and Johnson Controls.

In addition the Coega IDZ is well positioned to serve the other four OEMs (BMW, Nissan, Toyota and Ford) who are situated inland – through excellent direct road and rail links.

With recent investments of R1-billion in new component facilities in the past 22 months, operating from a comparatively low-cost base and duty-free access to the US market without quota restrictions and with similar agreements with the European Union – The Coega IDZ automotive sector enjoys the benefits of being one of the most diverse automotive clusters in the world.

  • Automotive component suppliers have the option to locate to the 216 hectare Nelson Mandela Bay Logistics Park (NMBLP) bordering Volkswagen South Africa in Uitenhage.
